Senior Mechanical Engineer

Role Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work with other engineers and internal company personnel to develop design solutions, exceling in engineering, project management and leadership. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will perform engineering duties in all project phases e.g. conceptual design, front- end design, detail engineering design and design integration of new facilities in upgrade type projects. The candidate must be fully qualified and have extensive experience working on major complex designs. The below details the main responsibilities of the role but are not limited to these.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all HSEQ requirements within the Mechanical Engineering discipline in accordance with THE COMPANY procedures and management systems
  • Provide technical support to Engineering studies such as design reviews, HAZOP, SIL, and Constructability.
  • Always utilize a safe approach in design and working practices.
  • Encourage attention to Health, Safety, Security and Environment in other personnel.
  • Assume sole responsibility for all mechanical engineering work scopes with directives from the Technical Manager.
  • Contribute to the overall growth of the business. Assist in the coordination of all activities related to mechanical engineering design
  • Work with and communicate with the management team
  • Assure the technical quality of work performed meet organizational standards, codes and general knowledge of engineering principles and projects
  • Perform and check calculations, specify equipment, and solve problems of complex to difficult engineering complexity
  • Prepare engineering deliverables and ensure that they conform to all applicable engineering codes and standards as well as the Client’s policies and procedures
  • Analyze and make independent recommendations regarding solutions to problems with varying complexity in accordance with organization and/or project objectives and guidelines
  • Serve as the mechanical engineer on projects; planning, managing and coordinating the mechanical engineering activities on large and/or technically complex portion of projects and/or serve in an individual contributor role as the mechanical expert completing broadly defined and/or technically complex engineering assignments
  • Provide sound technical advice and solutions to a diversity of technical problems within the discipline
  • Co-ordinate with other disciplines during all stages of design development, construction, pre- commissioning, and start-up to ensure design integrity and consistency
  • Conceptualize mechanical designs and produce solutions that are safe, cost effective, fit for purpose and add value to both THE COMPANY and the client(s);
  • Develop and review estimates and schedules, progress reports, including manpower forecasts
  • Pro-active attitude and basic knowledge of other disciplines such as Civil, Structural and E&I.
  • Review of vendor documentation requirements for use and integration within projects.
  • Contribute to and participate in formal and informal design reviews and the development of engineering changes
  • Review drawings, calculations, specifications and other engineering documentation for compliance with contract requirements, good engineering practices, codes, and standard
  • Develop and review estimates and schedules, progress reports, including manpower forecasts
  • Develop and review specifications, including design criteria
  • Ensure that all work is completed without compromise to quality and is delivered according to the schedule
  • Liaise with the Client’s Engineering, Operations and Maintenance staff as required to ensure a consistent approach to project completion
  • Identify any areas of concern with respect to progress and/or quality and recommend corrective actions as required
  • Lead Client discussion with focus on building strong Client relations to ensure expectations are met.
  • Management of workload and budgets across designated work scopes to ensure successful delivery.
  • Collect and analyze information to report timely required information to different users and management. Provide regular status reporting to applicable management and departments to enable them to take required actions
  • Participate in Business Development activities (work with Sales team to understand customer requirements and to provide sales support)
  • Create and maintain documentation to allow effective knowledge transfer through the company.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on problem management and resolutions
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management
  • Lead the Mechanical Engineering department, providing guidance and leadership to direct reports as well as managing their performance.
  • Participate in people development through mentoring, development of training material, conducting training seminars, and performance appraisal input and counseling
  • Provide direction and guidance on all mechanical engineering technical queries raised by either internal or external parties

  3. Escalate any issues to your line manager where unable to control or mitigate risk.
  4. Ensure controls identified in the risk assessment are in place and effective.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an Accredited University.
  • Minimum 10-15 years’ related experience or exposure to mechanical design principles.
  • Must be well organized with the ability to multi-task and have good communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think and work independently with minimal direction or engineering leadership.
  • Must be client-focused and advancement oriented.
  • Experience with leading and overseeing teams of at least 5-10 employees
  • Must be proficient or familiar with various software, such as CAD software: AutoCAD, Autodesk Plant3D, etc. and Business software: Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Must Possess ability to read and understand technical drawings and documentation including P&IDs, construction drawings, industry and site codes and standards, and manufacturing operating manuals.
