How to
Be Successful at Interview
So you are getting
ready for a job interview. Here are a few tips to bear in mind :
-
Keep an eye on
the newspapers so you know what is happening in the business
world and read up on the company, the industry it operates in
and its competitors so you can speak intelligently about the
firm during interview.
-
Call to find
out how many people will be interviewing you – if it is going to
be a panel interview, you need to know in advance. Take enough
copies of your documents for everyone.
-
Check your
outfit the night before. Here is some advice for dressing to
impress :
-
Interviews are
very formal meetings, so suits are the best option.
-
Be sure all
hems and collars are clean and tidy.
-
Cut finger
nails short and neat, remove carnival colour nail polish.
-
Wear dark
colours – navy blue, brown, black, grey – are all colours that
reflect confidence, professionalism and style.
-
Keep your
hairstyle as simple and neat as possible.
-
Wear
comfortable practical shoes. Ladies – Do not wear open toe
sandals or slippers. Closed-in court shoes or pumps are the best
option.
-
Remember the
jewellery rule – ONE. One ring on each hand, one earring in each
ear, one bracelet on each wrist. Any more than that is
inappropriate.
-
Men - never
ever wear white socks, You will be wearing brown or black shoes
so wear the corresponding sock colour. White socks are for
sneakers.
-
If in doubt,
mimic what bank workers wear. They always look smart.
-
Be on time to
the interview. Find the location in advance and figure out how
long it will take you to get there, factoring in traffic, taxi
availability, etc.
-
Practice so you
have a firm handshake. Introduce yourself confidently and
maintain eye contact throughout the job interview.
-
Employers are
looking for strong communication skills, the ability to work in
teams, a positive attitude and willingness to learn new skills.
Does this sound like you ?
-
Remember that
an interview is a two way dialogue – you can evaluate them as
much as they evaluate you.
-
Be honest about
your experience and skills, and be confident about achievements.
Avoid using Yes or No answers. Elaborate but don’t lie.
-
Be prepared to
answer questions such as :
-
How would you
describe yourself?
-
What do you
consider to be your finest accomplishment?
-
What are some
of the things that motivate you?
-
Give me three
reasons why I should hire you.
-
Describe
yourself.
-
What are some
of the things in a job that are important to you, and why?
-
What are some
of the things you would like to avoid in a job, and why?
-
What motivates
you: money, power or achievement, and why?
-
Do not talk
negatively about past employers and co-workers. This makes you
look petty and unprofessional.
-
Have questions
ready but never ask about salary, benefits or holiday allowance.
Enquire about training opportunities and how far the job will
take you – demonstrate a commitment to growing with the firm.
-
If they bring
up salary, then be prepared -- Don’t be embarrassed to declare
what you feel you are worth but be sure to work out in advance
what you need to earn, check the market value of the role, and
be realistic.
-
Don’t be afraid
to ask what will happen next and let them know that you are
interested in the position.
-
Show your
appreciation by dropping off or sending a thank you note as soon
as you can.
-
Call your
Regency rep afterwards to let them know how it went
